Well, it had been a while since I worked on anything to do with my car. So I got a wild burr up my heiney yesterday. I got my headliner board and sail panels out and was FINALLY going to finish covering them. Well, the sails turned out OK, but the headliner board snapped in half when I was glueing the frickin' material down!!! Right in the middle of the board! UUUUG!!!! I spent quite some time soaking resin into that thing to get it stiffened up. Apparently I didn't get enough on it (or rather in it) to make much difference. The middle layers weren't soaked with any resin at all! So back to square one on the headliner. Gonna look around to see if I can find another headliner board in decent shape. This time I'll inject the resin so I'm sure it will take. Two steps forward, one back. Bites! Ripper

That's initially what I wanted to do with mine was make it rigid enough to pop a mold from. But unfortunately it wasn't a great peice to start with. So I wouldn't have done it. I repaired it good enough to cover, because it still would have made a good board for that.
Do you have any idea how much Kidd charges? I know an MCK version is around $400.

Ripper, I got a replacement one from Classic Industries, it's ABS Plastic. Fit great, and if I remember it didn't cost too much at all., like $130 for the uncovered version

Yeah, I've seen them before Joe. I just never seen one installed to see how well they fit. Got any pics? Ya see, I worry about how it's going to fit around the T-top bar. I want it nice and snug in that area because that's one of the first areas seen on the car when you have the tops out, and people look inside. I had test fitted my board before I ever dumped any resin on it. I taped it closer together where it was loose around the T-top openings, then put the resin to it. After it cured, I stuck it back in place to see if I pulled the gaps in, and it did. So I was happier than a pig in slop! LOL! I just didn't complete it this winter. I figured I'd make sure all the resin I dumped on it was fully cured before I even attempted to cover it. It did seem kinds flimsy, but I thought, "well, it's not very thick to begin with." DUH!!!! So in essence, I spent an unheard of amount of time getting my board to fit to my liking, then snapped it! Ripper

Not at the moment, but I will get some next time I go to my grandmother's, since that's where my car sits.

I got one of the Classic plastic ones and I was very disappointed with the fit. Lots of gaps especially in the rear. Also not as wide as the original, my upper console which was tight on a stick liner was loose on the replacement one.

I've seen one of Joe's headliners installed in a car (the one with a molded upper console in it), and it fit really great.
I held one of his regular headliners at Rob's (Zapper) house, and the same thing, it is really well made.
Affordable too, I think he charges $125, plus shipping. I would go for one of his because he's a fan of these cars, and took the time to make it right.
Some parts form the "big guys" tend not to be so spectacular.
Give him a shout, I'm sure he'd be more than happy to help you out, Ripper.
I'm in the same boat with my headliner material. It's starting to sag and look really ugly.
Joey.

That's what was initially wrong with mine except for a couple of areas that I filled in. (Like the sunvisor mounts, and dome light hole. Who really uses those worthless visors anyway??LOL!) So I stripped all the old off, and found that the board was fairly intact. I just didn't like the way it fit around the T-top openings. SO I thought I could remedy that, plus make it stronger. Well one problem was solved, but I didn't make it stronger...LOL! A little too much pressure when applying the fabric was all it took. SNAP!
So I guess, more than anything, if you guys decide to reupholster your old board, and decide to use resin on it to give it a "refresher", make CERTAIN that the resin gets INTO the board. NOT just the outside couple of layers. Looks and feel were REALLY decieving, and it didn't take much to snap mine in half.
Joey, I'll definately check out Joe Kidd. Hopefully shipping charges won't rape me too bad.

Hey Rip,
I think B.J (Blade21) asked Joe to cut the headliner into a few pieces, and ship it like that, and then he re-assembled it.
Sounds like you're good with fiberglass/resin, so this may be an option for you to save on shipping charges.
Good luck with it,
Joey.

That's a good possibility Joey.....I'll keep that in mind. About how thick are Joe's headliner boards?

Anypics on the fit? I'm not going to post the pics of mine, Sorry Ripper. After looking at mine, from the heat, it's kinda saggy right now & a little warped. I'll have to try & fix that, at least for now.
